Question 1

What does a professional drummer contribute to a song or performance?

Accepted Answer

A drummer provides the rhythmic foundation that helps a song feel cohesive, expressive, and engaging. Beyond keeping time, a professional drummer responds to the music and supports its energy, dynamics, and overall character while serving the song. These subtleties are what allows the music to breathe and FEEL alive. Drum samples, beats, and/or electronic drum loops and backing tracks are great at the time keeping responsibilities of the drummer, but fall short when it comes to the nuances that live drums add to any performance. Touch. Sound. Feel. These are the human elements that connect with the listener on a deeper emotional level, and are the exact elements that are sacrificed when a live drummer is replaced by a backing track or drum machine.

Question 2

What genres do you play?

Accepted Answer

I love playing all styles! Funk, soul, indie rock, folk, rock, jazz, fusion, Americana, blues, Latin and more. My goal is to always honor the style i’m playing, its heritage, and feel to the best of my ability.

Question 3

Why do I need a professional drummer in the studio?

Accepted Answer

Recording with a drummer typically begins with understanding the song, arrangement, tempo, and desired feel. A professional can help translate those musical ideas into a performance that complements the rest of the production, which also includes knowing which techniques and tools are required to achieve a certain sound. Most important of all, a professional brings efficiency and consistency to a recording session meaning you aren’t wasting days of precious studio time trying to get the perfect take.

Question 4

Why should I work with a professional drummer?

Accepted Answer

A band is only as good as their drummer. A professional drummer brings musical awareness, consistency, experience, and a collaborative mindset with the goal of serving the song over the self. Their contribution can breathe life into pre-recorded backing tracks; help the music communicate more clearly; and enhance the overall live performance for both those on stage and in the audience in ways a drum machine or backing track can’t.
